Abstract

|
Five cases of congenital cardiac anomalies corrected under hypothermia were presented in this article. The technique of body surface cooling with ice water and rewarming with hot water was used. To prevent the occurrence of ventricular fibrillation, the patients were hyperventilated during hypothermia. In no case did ventricular fibrillation develop. The lower margin of rectal temperature for each case was between 28° and 29°C. Cardiac inflow and outflow occlusion time for each case ranged from 3 to 8 minutes.
There were 2 cases of interatrial septal defects (secundum type). One was successfully closed in 3 minutes and 45 seconds and the other in 8 minutes and 45 seconds.
